THESILO

Reutilização de silos de grãos como baterias térmicas para armazenamento de energia renovável

Context

The EUROACE Euroregion, covering the Portuguese regions of Alentejo and Centro, together with Extremadura in Spain, has an extensive network of former grain silos strategically distributed across its territory of 92,500 km² and 507 municipalities. However, the region faces significant challenges, such as low population density, fragmentation of the business sector and difficulties in attracting investment in strategic sectors. Despite these challenges, the strong growth in renewable energy production has generated significant electricity surpluses from solar, wind and hydroelectric power stations. In this context, THESILO emerges as a key opportunity to harness these resources, converting silos into thermal storage systems that improve grid flexibility and optimise energy management. This transformation will not only drive the efficient use of renewable energy but also foster new business opportunities, employment and technological development in the field of sustainability. Heat storage is essential for the agri-food industry, a key sector in the regional economy. Many of these companies require process heat at medium temperatures for drying, pasteurisation and other thermal treatments.

The repurposing of silos as thermal batteries will enable more efficient, sustainable and economically viable energy solutions, reducing operational costs and dependence on fossil fuels. This synergy between the energy and agro-industrial sectors enhances the project’s impact and scalability. The refurbishment of this infrastructure will reduce investment in new facilities and promote public-private collaboration. Furthermore, the excellent land connectivity between regions will facilitate the coordination and replication of the model in other areas with similar characteristics, ensuring its long-term impact.

Goal

The THESILO project is a pilot initiative exploring the conversion of old grain silos into thermal batteries for renewable energy storage. These structures, which are currently disused, are strategically located, have a large capacity and feature highly resistant concrete structures, making them ideal candidates for reuse in thermal storage systems. Their transformation will enable greater integration of intermittent renewable sources, contributing to the stability of the electricity grid and the decarbonisation of the energy system.

The project is structured around four main areas:

(1) selection and adaptation of silos, assessing their structure and insulation and applying digitalisation tools;
(2) optimisation of the storage medium, exploring options for recycled and efficient materials for thermal energy storage;
(3) design and integration of systems, including Power-to-Heat, heat exchangers and heat transfer fluids; and
(4) feasibility assessment, analysing the model’s sustainability, legal impact and replicability.

THESILO drives the revitalisation of rural areas, promoting investment in sustainable infrastructure, job creation and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Its implementation in the EUROACE region strengthens these regions’ competitiveness in energy innovation, positioning them as leaders in sustainable thermal storage solutions
