The consumption of cement and mortar as systematically decreased, along with the reduction in construction. Building renovation is increasing at a slow rate, in part because of the poor state of existing buildings and also because of the lack of funding.

Building renovation is more complex than new building construction. Furthermore, renovation leads to additional thermal and acoustics behaviour requirements. Consequently there is a growing need for the application of ETICS and thermal coatings an for the development of technically enhanced mortars.

This is the scope of the first Symposium on Mortars and Thermal Coating Solutions, which will be held in Coimbra on 5 and 6 June 2014.
